Rape victim awarded $1 billion after 6 years

For years, Hope Cheston thought her rape case had been “swept under the rug.” In 2012, Cheston was sexually assaulted by an armed security guard at an apartment complex near Atlanta while she was visiting a friend, according to court records. She was 14. The guard, Brandon Lamar Zachary, was 22. He was convicted of rape and sentenced to 20 years in prison — but, Cheston said, the security company that hired him never contacted her or apologized for what happened. And ever since the attack, she said, she has wrestled with doubt and regret. “Every victim has that — ‘Well I should’ve did this, I should’ve did that, I shouldn’t have been here in the first place,’ ” Cheston said. But in an extraordinary move, jurors in Clayton County, Ga., have awarded her a “life-changing” and “history-making” sum of money that, she said, represents what a victim’s pain is worth: $1 billion. “It was a shocking moment; it was a beautiful moment,” she said of hearing the jury’

Nigeria troops accused of rape by international amnesty

Troops separated women from their husbands and raped them, sometimes in exchange for food, in refugee camps, the rights group added. Thousands of people have also starved to death in the camps in north-eastern Nigeria since 2015, Amnesty said. Nigeria's military has dismissed the allegations as malicious and false. "These false reports, which are capable of derailing the good work being done by our patriotic and selfless soldiers, must stop," the military said in a statement. Troops have been battling the insurgents since 2009 in Borno and other north-eastern states. More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict, and about 1.8 million people have fled their homes. The military has repeatedly been accused of carrying out atrocities, and the US, during the presidency of Barack Obama, refused to sell weapons to Nigeria, citing concerns about the military's human rights record. However, the Trump administration has decided to press ahead wit

Trump pardon late black legend Jack Jackon

For more than 100 years, Jack Johnson’s legend as the first black heavyweight boxing champion has been undisputed, but his legacy had been tarnished by a racially tainted criminal conviction. His battles against white opponents, in the ring and outside of it, gave rise to “The Great White Hope” play and movie and he came to be lionized as a barrier breaker. But the criminal conviction from 1913 that most would find abhorrent today — for transporting a white woman across state lines — haunted Johnson well after his death in 1946 and motivated politicians and celebrities for years to advocate for a pardon, however symbolic. On Thursday in the Oval Office, Johnson posthumously found an unexpected champion: President Trump. Although his own record on civil rights has come under question, often harshly, Mr. Trump, flanked by boxing champions and Sylvester Stallone, the actor who brought the case to his attention, signed an order pardoning Johnson. The presiden

New study: Depression in men can lead to reduced rate of pregnancy in women.

A recent study, published on Thursday in “Fertility and Sterility”, suggests that there is a connection between the fertility level and mental health of men and women both. The research has the data from 1.608 men and 1,650 women, who were selected from six sites in the US, via the NIH’s (National Institutes of Health) Reproductive Medicine Network. A lot of participants are the couples in real life, and were undergoing the fertility treatment, like artificial insemination or medication of ovarian stimulation, but not IVF. Depending on the data, around 2% of men and 6% of women from total participants were reported with major depression events. However, the cases of major depression are small in number, just 34 men; an analysis is done to found the difference in 34 men and the other male participants of the study. The men with major depression have 60% fewer chances to have a live birth compared to the other men (participants) of the study. To put it specifically, among the 3

Entrepreneurship: See reason why medium and small business fail in Nigeria.

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, during the recent launch of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Clinic in Onitsha, Anambra State, noted the invaluable contribution of the sector to the national economy. In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Laolu Akande, he said: “As individual units, MSMEs may be small, but together they account for up to 50 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and over 80 per cent of the labour force. It therefore follows that they are of decisive importance in the national economy but the key encumbrance to the development of the sector in Nigeria is financing.” It is in view of this that the statement on Tuesday by the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun that the Federal Government is working towards settling over N45 billion debts owed to the local contractors of the defunct Nigerian Airways is a welcome development. This came as the Minister had noted that the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is the lifeline of the Ni

Royal marriage: Prince Harry and wife to delay honeymoon for work.

The newly ennobled Duke and Duchess of Sussex staged a huge party after the ceremony on Saturday at Windsor Castle, where they were greeted by around 100,000 people lining the streets and watched by millions around the world. The beaming couple were seen driving to the evening bash in a vintage Jaguar, Meghan having changed from her sweeping Givenchy wedding gown into a sleek Stella McCartney halterneck dress, with Harry switching his military frockcoat for black tie. On the bride's finger was a large aquamarine ring, which belonged to Harry's beloved late mother, Diana. Details of the bash, hosted by Prince Charles in a house on the castle grounds for 200 close friends and family, were a top secret although fireworks were seen over Windsor late in the evening. China goalkeeper rejected fashion line and catwalk for football.

Zhao Lina is the face of Chinese women's football, a striking presence who towers over most people and turned down approaches to be a model. Now the 26-year-old international goalkeeper, who stands 1.88m, hopes to use her stature to help raise the profile of the women's game in China. The country, under football-fan President Xi Jinping, is on a mission to stage and perhaps even win the men's World Cup. Chinese clubs are lavishing money to attract foreign coaches and players, while authorities are building football infrastructure and encouraging the nation's youth to take up the game. Among the star players lured to China was Argentine forward Carlos Tevez, reportedly on a contract worth 730,000 euros a week at Shanghai Shenhua before he returned home earlier this year. Zhao, who played for China at the 2016 Olympics and has more than 50 caps, earns just over 10,000 yuan (US$1,500) a month at club side Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank (RCB) - and she is the hi

Music streaming service to be launch by youtube soon

Google’s YouTube will launch a music streaming service next week, it said on Thursday, looking to use its popular internet video brand to tap the growing market for paid music streaming. YouTube Music, which will offer both ad-supported and $9.99-per-month versions, will compete directly with services from Spotify Technology SA, Pandora Media Inc, Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc. YouTube Music will launch on May 22, and include features such as personalized playlists based on a user’s YouTube history. The service is expected to eventually replace Google Play Music, the Alphabet Inc unit’s existing music streaming brand. The news sent stocks of music streaming companies Spotify and Pandora lower by about 2 percent on Thursday morning. “Google has an advantage given YouTube’s more than a billion users and viewers. So, it has opportunities to convert some into YouTube Music listeners or premium subscribers,” said Ali Mogharabi, analyst at Morningstar Research. The growing a

Ogun students tied to cross and beaten for being late.

The three - including the headteacher - were taken into custody after a police officer stumbled across the incident in south-western Ogun State. Pictures show at least two young people - one boy and one girl - tied to a makeshift crucifix with green string. A police spokesman described the punishment as "a barbaric act". Local reports say they were being punished for being late. The officer - named only as Livinus - tried to intervene, asking the school's owner to free the teenagers. When the owner of the school in Ayetoro, 145km (90 miles) north-west of Lagos, refused, the officer decided to take action - only to be forced back. "When I tried to untie the pupils, the proprietor and his teachers beat me up," he told Nigerian newspaper Punch. "Before I returned from picking handcuffs from my car, they had grabbed a friend who was with me... and beaten him up with a horsewhip." The suspects were eventually arrested after back-up arrived.

Champion league: I don't understand why juventus were protesting - Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo could not understand why Juventus protested Michael Oliver's late decision to hand Real Madrid a penalty and a dramatic aggregate win on Wednesday night in the Champions League last four. Lucas Vazquez was brought down in stoppage time by Medhi Benatia, with English referee Oliver pointing to the spot for Ronaldo to convert for a 4-3 aggregate victory. In a dramatic match, Juventus had come back to 3-3 in the tie following their 3-0 first-leg defeat, but Ronaldo says Juve's protests, which saw Gianluigi Buffon sent off, were unfounded. "I don't understand why they are protesting," he said to reporters after the game. "Lucas was tackled from behind and if they don't give him the penalty, it's a goal." Ronaldo, who scored his 120th Champions League goal before celebrating with his shirt off in front of the Real fans, admitted he had to calm himself down before stepping up for the memorable victory.
